A 53-year-old San Francisco man has been preparing to run the San Francisco Marathon while living underneath a bridge, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Readers of the newspaper chipped in to pay Ronnie Goodman's $120 entry fee, and afterwards, marathon organizers seized upon his tale of somehow finding time to train for competitive runs while also looking for a place to live and a place to work as the feel-good story of the July 27 race.
Goodman is running to raise money for Hospitality House, a resource center where he also learned some artistic skills, the newspaper reported.
Goodman has been living outside for two years now, but the uncomfortable environs haven't slowed him too much, the newspaper reported. Last week, he ran the legendary 7.4-mile Dipsea Race in Marin County.
