A volunteer firefighter died after battling a four-alarm blaze in New Jersey Sunday night, authorities say.

The 54-year-old firefighter, whose identity hasn't been released, died after responding to the Hydrair warehouse in Union Beach at about 6 p.m. Sunday, officials say. The firefighter was running in and out of the building, which was engulfed in flames, when he collapsed on the street.

He was later pronounced dead. It's not clear if he died as a result of the fire or from some other condition, officials say.

A Point Pleasant Beach fire company posted condolences on its Facebook page.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with your family," the post says. "Rest easy brother. We'll take it from here."

No one was in the building when the fire started, and no other injuries have been reported.

The blaze burned well into the night and sent thick black smoke into the sky as heavy flames tore through the building's roof. The fire burned so hot that firefighters were initially unable to get inside the building, officials said.

The smoke could be seen for several miles, witnesses said.

Firefighters stayed at the scene overnight dousing hot spots. Investigators with the Monmouth County Prosecutors Office said they planned to go into the building on Monday morning to try to determine what sparked the fire.

Hydrair is a company that sells hydraulic tools, hoses and other equipment.
