A lockdown at the White House was lifted before 6 p.m. and a man is in custody after following a Secret Service motorcade on to a closed portion of Pennsylvania Avenue.
About 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, a man in a Honda Civic trailed the motorcade taking the president’s daughters home through the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance to the White House, News4 Washington’s Jackie Bensen reported.
Secret Service agents immediately stopped the vehicle.
D.C. police swept the vehicle for explosives but found nothing.
It’s unknown whether the man followed the motorcade deliberately or by accident.
The incident caused gridlock in the area as uniformed Secret Service agents kept people out of the area and the plaza on Pennsylvania Avenue was closed for more than 45 minutes.
