President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper have placed a friendly bet of a case of beer each on the U.S. vs. Canada Olympic hockey matches -- and Thursday afternoon, Obama lost one of them, when Canada's women's hockey team beat Team USA for gold.

The bets don't involve just any case of beer. President Obama was betting the rare Sam Kass/White House home-brewed beer. There were no details as to what beer Harper would give Obama should the U.S. win.

The bet has become an Olympic tradition between the two neighbors.

"For a very brief period of time, I may not feel as warm towards Canadians as I normally do, at least until those matches are over," Obama joked with Harper during a summit in Toluca, Mexico on Wednesday.

The Canadian women's hockey team defeated the U.S. for the Olympic gold medal Thursday in Sochi, rallying in the final minutes of the game to score two goals to tie the game and send it into overtime. Canada clinched gold — their fourth consecutive in women's hockey — with a 3-2 score in overtime.

The Canadian and U.S. men's hockey teams play in a semifinals round on Friday, Feb. 21 at 12 p.m. ET.

Obama gave a case of Molson Canadian beer to Harper in 2010 after Canada won the men's gold in overtime at the Vancouver Games.

The two leaders announced their wager on Twitter Thursday:
